Cochise County Appoints New Elections Director
COCHISE COUNTY, Ariz. — On Tuesday, the Cochise County Board of Supervisors made a unanimous decision to appoint Melissa Avant as the new elections director for the county.
The board highlighted that Avant brings with her over 20 years of experience in leadership, policy, and administration within both state and local governments.
Frank Antenori, who chairs the Supervisory Committee, expressed his confidence in Avant’s capabilities to lead the election division effectively.
“Melissa Avant has a proven history of integrity, public service, and strong organizational leadership,” Antenori commented.
Avant has held significant roles in various departments, which include health and finance, as well as being involved in the state’s first initiative program.
“I feel honored to serve Cochise County in this new capacity,” Avant stated. “My background, commitment to ethical leadership, and strong dedication to public service have prepared me to ensure that our elections are fair, transparent, and secure.”
She holds a Master’s degree in Government from Wayland Baptist University and a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix.
Avant’s official start date is set for May 27th. Prior to her appointment, Tim Matics filled the role of elections director but resigned last April. Marisol Rentalia then served as the interim director and will continue to collaborate with Avant to ensure a smooth process for the upcoming special election primary for Arizona’s 7th council district, which is scheduled for July 15th.
