Coconino County’s New Conviction Integrity Unit
The Coconino County Attorney’s Office has launched a Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) to address claims that arise after a conviction.
This unit will evaluate allegations of actual innocence and provide recommendations to the county attorney based on the validity of these claims.
“In Arizona, prosecutors have a unique obligation to act when they discover clear evidence suggesting someone’s innocence,” stated Ammon Barker, the county attorney. “The Conviction Integrity Unit symbolizes our dedication to addressing these responsibilities through a fair, comprehensive, and transparent methodology.”
To support this work, Barker will be guided by the Conviction Review Board, which includes former Coconino County Superior Court Judge Mark R. Moran and ex-Flagstaff Police Detective Casey Rucker.
For an application to be considered, it must satisfy specific requirements. There must be a complete appeal process along with reliable evidence of innocence or new methods available to test or retest existing evidence. All applicants need to adhere to these established criteria. More information can be found at coconino.az.gov/convictionIntegrityUnit.
