Coconino County enters State 3 Fire Restrictions, banning smoking & all open flames

Coconino County entered Stage 3 fire limits at 3:00 pm on June 17. This restriction applies throughout Coconino County. Fire limits are enacted to protect public health and safety by reducing the number of man-made wildfires.

This ordinance applies to unincorporated territories, i.e., portions of Coconino County outside the scope of incorporation of municipalities, federally owned lands, or federally recognized tribes pursuant to 25 CFR part 83.

Tier 3 Fire Restrictions prohibit burning, open fires, the use of charcoal or propane, or regular wood campfires on unincorporated or private property within the county.

The Stage 3 exemption allows burning, open fires and campfires only if:

  • A person who has written permission or a derogation.
  • Personal use of tobacco or other tobacco-smoking media only when used in a closed vehicle.
  • Emergency utility and railway repairs and other health and safety mitigation measures when operated by utilities or railways and implemented in accordance with approved agency plans.
  • By federal, state, or local officials or members of organized rescue or firefighting organizations, in the performance of official duties.

No outdoor activities allow open fires, campfires, fireworks, and burning events unless permitted by the exceptions above.

Although activities involving mechanical operations, such as lawn care, house building, and area cleaning, are not specifically prohibited, residents and visitors should you must use your best judgment. Those who engage in these activities may be held legally responsible.
