FLAGSTAFF, Arizona (AP) — The Coconino County Board of Supervisors has approved an immediate transfer of $5 million to the county’s Flood Control District to address the problem of monsoon flooding.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Flagstaff Mayor Paul Deasy issued a state of emergency, allowing the city to provide additional resources to help with the disaster response.
Disaster grant assistance helps cover costs associated with damage to public infrastructure, such as debris removal, emergency protective measures, and restoration of disaster-damaged public facilities.
Since July 16, Flagstaff has experienced a steady stream of heavy rain that has flooded areas behind recently burned mountains.
County officials said flash floods affected the Timberline, Wupatki Trail, and Donnie Park neighborhoods, as well as the west side of Flagstaff.
The annual monsoon season lasts until September and can rain every day.
County officials believe the ongoing costs of flood mitigation could exceed the $5.6 million cost of the aftermath of the 2010 Schultz Fire.
