Comite de Bien Estar gets $1.9 million for building self-help homes in south Yuma County

Future homeowners in Yuma County will be able to put some of their sweat money towards building their homes thanks to a federal grant.

U.S. Congressman Raul Grijalva announced that the Bien-Ester Commission received $1.9 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Service.

Comite de Bien Estar (Committee of Wellness) works with and provides housing to low-income residents primarily in San Luis, Arizona.

The funds will be used to build 50 homes. Homeowners can help build their homes in a model popular in southern Yuma County.

Rep. Grijalva said the funds will be used for technical assistance to recruit families, complete loan applications, and oversee construction.

“This is an important investment that will provide much-needed affordable housing to people in border communities,” Grijalva said in a released statement. I am proud to support this federal funding and will continue to support opportunities to provide affordable housing for families in our region. ”
