Consider air pollution before lighting fireplace for your holiday, Maricopa County officials say

Maricopa County officials want to remind residents to do their part and keep the air clean this holiday season.

During this time of the year, the Phoenix region has a tendency to increase in harmful air pollution. Ali Halpert, a spokesman for the Maricopa County Air Quality Department, said that it is a combination of factors – the valley’s topography and temperature drop keeps the air trapped in place.

“This temperature inversion creates a kind of lid in the valley, preventing air from flowing out or circulating. Whatever the contamination we have, it remains stagnant and can be inhaled. It’s close to the surface,” Halpert said.

Additionally, people who gather on holidays during this time of year brighten up lots of fireplaces and fire holes by burning wood.

“Breathing from contaminated air, especially wood smoke, is harmful to our health, affects breathing, and exacerbates asthma, bronchitis and more,” Halpert said.

Halpert said the best way to prevent air pollution is to avoid burning wood. You can also check it before starting the fire Department website or Smartphone app Air quality predictions and no burn date restrictions.

“It’s really important to adhere to these burn date restrictions,” Halpert said. “It’s not just about protecting the environment, it’s about protecting yourself and your community.”
