County Supervisors Endorse Zoning Division for Housing Project

At a recent meeting of the Graham County Board of Supervisors on August 4, 2025, significant decisions were made concerning zoning rules that impact local residents seeking more manageable living conditions. The board approved changes to rezone several areas from general land use to single-family homes, making it possible to have smaller lot sizes for families who may find larger properties challenging to maintain.

Director Howard put forward a motion to approve the zoning split of RZ 935-25. This includes redesignating specific plots to enable the development of smaller residential lots. The motion featured a friendly amendment mandating that properties share private roads to enhance accessibility and foster cooperation among neighbors. The board showed unanimous support for this motion, acknowledging the need for smaller, more manageable lots within the community.

This decision illustrates a growing awareness that not every family is capable of maintaining an acre of land; indeed, some families indicated that half-acre lots are more suitable for their needs. Discussions among board members stressed the necessity of adapting zoning regulations to address the varied needs of Graham County residents, particularly those in search of lower property maintenance responsibilities.

Alongside the approved zoning alterations, the board also considered another rezone request for Rez 937-25, which involves a section of a 3.5-acre parcel. This request aims to rezone only half-acre portions, further underscoring the trend toward smaller residential lots in the region.

As Graham County continues to develop, these zoning adaptations will play a crucial role in meeting residents’ housing demands and will enable families to find properties that align better with their lifestyles and maintenance needs. The board’s dedication to these changes reflects a constructive approach to community growth and the satisfaction of its residents.
