COVID booster eligibility expands as Coconino County adds to its monkeypox total

Coconino County had mixed COVID-19 numbers this week, but the number of monkeypox cases rose again.

On Wednesday, eligibility for the updated COVID booster was expanded from 5 to 11 years old.

According to the Coconino County Health and Human Services (CCHHS) October 10 update, five monkeypox cases have now been reported in the county. Four in all last week. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has listed a total of 27,096 confirmed cases across the United States as of Thursday, and in Arizona he has 506. Last week it reported 26,385 in the US and 478 statewide.

Coconino County still has low community transmission levels of COVID, but community-level indicators continued to rise in the week ending Oct. 8. Overall, COVID indicators this week were mixed across the county.

Currently, the rate of new hospitalizations due to COVID is 4.9 per 100,000 and 6.5% of staffed hospital beds are occupied by COVID patients. Last week, the county’s hospital admission rate was 4.2 per 100,000 of him, and 5.6% of hospital beds were occupied by his COVID patients.

A total of 91 new cases were reported this week (rate of 63.8 per 100,000), similar to last week’s total of 95 new cases (66.6 per 100,000). The positive test rate in the county increased to 9.7% this week (8.5% the week before) as the number of tests performed decreased slightly to 980 from 1,077 the week before.

Residents aged 65 and over had the highest case incidence (159 per 100,000) and positive rate (13.9%) this week, followed by 25-44 year olds with a positive rate of 12.1%.

Eight people were hospitalized with COVID this week, up from seven the week before, and no deaths have been reported (one week ago). His COVID-like illness (CLI) rate at county hospitals was 3.7%, similar to last week’s 3.6%.

A youth booster has been updated to provide additional protection against Omicron variants and less protection from previous vaccines. CCHHS continues to encourage county residents to get her COVID and flu shots.

“Flu vaccination has many benefits, including reducing the risk of flu illness, hospitalization and even flu-related death,” CCHHS wrote in a Facebook post. “Seasonal vaccination is especially important for young children because of the high risk of severe illness from influenza.”
