Democrats’ Mistrust of Trump Highlights Economic Concerns
Democrats recently found themselves in a bit of a pickle, seemingly mocking President Donald Trump’s mistrust while inadvertently casting a shadow on former President Joe Biden’s economic record.
On Thursday night, the party’s official X account shared a graphic illustrating a significant increase in grocery prices from 2021 to 2024, captioned “Trump’s America.” This, of course, raises eyebrows since Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris are in office during this period. The White House quickly responded to the situation, posting a version of the graphic labeled “Biden” for the same timeframe. Interestingly, summer gas prices are currently at their lowest in four years, following a Middle Eastern ceasefire.
The Democratic National Committee hasn’t commented on this faux pas. Other users on X jumped in, pointing out the graphic’s failure to effectively communicate their message. One notable conservative commentator, Greg Price, mentioned, “It was deleted but I’ll never forget it,” highlighting the oversight.
According to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), inflation in the U.S. soared to its highest in 40 years under Biden by the summer of 2022. With the 2024 election on the horizon, many voters have expressed that the economy is a critical issue for them, underscoring widespread dissatisfaction with Biden’s economic policies.
In contrast, the CPI hit a low during Trump’s presidency in April. Despite concerns surrounding Trump’s tariffs, various sectors of the economy, including consumer sentiment and retail sales, remained steady in June.
Additionally, summer gas prices dropped to a four-year low, as reported by the American Automobile Association. Energy analysts have attributed this trend to Trump’s policies that favored domestic energy production, particularly after Biden’s approach affects the fossil fuel industry in the name of combating climate change. Gas prices surged by 92% during Biden’s initial two years in office.
Projected to rise by 2.7% in June compared to the previous year, the CPI reflects a mix of factors from both Biden’s and Trump’s terms. Regarding essentials, the Democratic Party’s graphics note that prices for dairy, meat, alcohol, among others, are indeed higher than they were in July 2024.
As it stands, the White House has yet to provide any comments on this unfolding situation.
