House Democrats are reportedly considering appointing a prominent promoter of the discredited Russiagate saga to the committee investigating the botched assassination plot against former President Donald Trump, according to Punchbowl News.
Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman of New York is reportedly a leading candidate for a select congressional committee investigating the July 13 shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, that nearly claimed President Trump's life. according to Speaking to Punchbowl News, Goldman served as lead counsel in President Trump's first impeachment trial before being elected to the House of Representatives in 2022. Over the years, he has spread false claims that President Trump was effectively a Russian pawn, openly criticized the former president and consistently portrayed him as a threat to democracy.

Additionally, Goldman has recently made some strongly negative statements about Trump.
“At this point, there is no doubt that he should never again hold public office. He is not only unfit, he is subversive of our democracy and must be removed,” Goldman said. Said Trump made the remarks during an appearance on former White House press secretary Jen Psaki's MSNBC show in November 2023. Trump later retracted his comments and apologized, saying it was a “poor choice of words.”
Goldman has delivered a similar message recently about the threat that President Trump poses to American democracy.
“Donald Trump remains the greatest threat to our democracy,” Goldman said in a June 24 report. post “You only have to look at Project 2025, which is a plan by President Trump and his allies to lead us towards fascism,” Trump told Mr. X, weeks before a gunman nearly killed him on national television. “You only have to look at Project 2025, which is a plan by President Trump and his allies to lead us towards fascism,” he continued, referring to a 900-page document compiled by a conservative think tank from which Trump has distanced himself.
The bipartisan congressional select committee investigating the assassination attempt on President Trump will be made up of 13 members, seven of whom will be Republicans and six of whom will be Democrats. According to Punchbowl News, Democrats being considered for the committee include Rep. Glenn Ivey of Maryland, Rep. Grace Meng of New York, and Rep. Jason Crow of Colorado.
Goldman's office and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
