The Department of Homeland Security defended women working in law enforcement ahead of a hearing Monday into security failings at the July 13 rally where former President Donald Trump was nearly killed.
The Secret Service has come under fire after President Trump was slightly injured in an assassination attempt that killed former volunteer fire chief Cory Comperatore and injured two other attendees, with some questioning whether female agents could have protected him. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas posted a statement on X on Saturday defending the Secret Service and its female agents. “In the days following the assassination attempt on former President Trump, some have made public statements questioning the presence of women in law enforcement, including the U.S. Secret Service,” said the statement signed by Mayorkas and senior Department of Homeland Security officials, including Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle. “These allegations are unfounded and offensive.”
“Every day, in communities large and small across our nation, women serve in federal, state, local, tribal, territorial and university law enforcement agencies,” the statement continued. “They are highly trained and accomplished professionals who risk their lives on the front lines for the safety and security of others. They are brave and selfless patriots who deserve our gratitude and respect.”
Trump campaign official Chris LaCivita also condemned the criticism of female Secret Service agents on Saturday.
“I saw two women, one with a gun in her hand and the other one hugging his body. Where I come from, that's pretty crazy,” LaCivita said. according to To CNN reporter Kate Sullivan.

“I know this: hordes of Secret Service agents risked their lives and put their bodies between President Trump and bullets, and anyone who says anything different about the people on stage is an idiot,” LaCivita said. Added.
Cheatle is scheduled to testify before the House Oversight Committee on Monday. Hearing to investigate security failings that allowed a gunman to fire multiple shots at the former president during the July 13 rally.
