ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith hit back at Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday when asked a direct question about how he could have “missed” President Joe Biden’s mental state.
In June 2023, Mr. Smith publicly criticized Mr. Biden’s re-election bid, citing the president’s age and ability to serve another four years, urging Democrats to nominate someone else. On “Hannity,” the Fox host asked Smith how much he had missed the president’s mental health during the first three years of his term, and how he had “montage after montage” for the president. He emphasized how much he has played.
“Wait. Let me answer. First of all, don’t try that on me. I criticized Joe Biden a year before the election. I’m also going to rake in the coals with you.” I was right there when you shoveled the coal,” Smith said. “I was like, Everybody, what are you talking about? You don’t know anything.”
Mr. Hannity was heard pointing out that Mr. Smith criticized Mr. Biden just a year before the presidential election, but Mr. Smith acknowledged that he was late in criticizing Mr. Biden. (Related article: ‘It was sad’: Stephen A. Smith says Biden’s farewell requires ‘silence or a simple farewell’)
“But the bottom line is, I was right there the year before the election. That’s number one,” Smith said. “Secondly, what I said when I talked about Kamala Harris and voted for her is that we didn’t want an upset that would recreate what we saw in his first term. ”
“I thought you got the House. You can win the House. You can win the Senate. You’ll have people who will literally put her in place and pull her to the center, and you’ll be able to There wouldn’t be any confusion, because I didn’t like the way he did it. [Trump] I took action. That’s all I said,” Smith said.

But after President-elect Donald Trump’s victory, Smith publicly regretted voting for the party in November.
Smith went on to say that while he had “no problem” with Trump’s positions on the economy, border and foreign affairs, he didn’t think Trump was “the right person for the job.”
“So there were a lot of things that we agreed on. I said the office of president is a statesman’s job, a statesman’s position, so I don’t think the person is qualified for the office. I couldn’t believe it. I wish the other guys were better,” Smith said.
“But in hindsight, when you look at what happened after the election and look at the level of it. [of’] Every minute he vacillates, every time he sees people gathering in the Capitol during his confirmation hearing, he acts like he’s campaigning. He won the election and look how they’re still acting! It’s just disgusting to watch. It’s all disgusting,” Smith said.
Throughout Biden’s term, Republicans have criticized the president’s mental health. But Democrats have continued to defend his cognitive abilities and downplay concerns.
