Witnesses captured footage of the moment firefighters rescued a baby from a fire in a high-rise building on Chicago's South Shore.
Firefighters raised a ladder toward smoke billowing from one of the building's windows. The video shows a woman carrying a small baby climbing through a window and down a fire department ladder to first responders who were able to secure the baby. Firefighters didn't just save babies, NBC 5 report. Dozens of nervous witnesses watched as firefighters struggled to save others from the burning building.
“There was a woman hanging out outside the window saying she needed help,” witness Dominic Williams told NBC 5. She, everyone started hanging out outside the building. ”
“I saw firefighters rescue at least two people,” said witness Lupino Dickerson. “They took care of business. I'm proud of the Chicago Fire Department.”
One person decided to jump from the fourth floor as the fire spread and firefighters heard people screaming from windows, NBC 5 reported. He survived, but witness Warren Mack Jr. said: sad. “
Chicago Fire officials said seven people, including an infant, were hospitalized as a result of the fire, NBC 5 reported. The infant is in critical condition.
Investigators are currently investigating the cause of the fire. Chicago Fire Department officials indicated the fire started on the second floor of the building, NBC 5 reported.
