Drivers report being stranded on I-40 overnight after Friday’s winter storm

WILLIAMS, Arizona – ABC15 hears from viewers who say they were scattered overnight on high altitude I-40 due to winter weather.

Viewer Toni sent us this message:

“My husband works in Belmont and lives in Williams. He left his job at 7pm on a Friday and went home. They closed his I-40 and locked him up on the road. [Well]it’s now 6:30am on a Saturday, but he’s still locked up in the road!

How is this possible? What can you do? ”

The Arizona Department of Transport confirmed with ABC15 that it had addressed multiple incidents yesterday.

On Friday evening, Adot reported backups of over 15 miles of cars left behind due to vehicle slide-offs and winter weather crashes.

Adot officials are encouraging drivers to delay travel plans until the winter storm passes. But for those who have to travel, they say that if you crash or a dangerous condition closes the road, you need to prepare to spend “long time” on your vehicle in winter conditions.

“Our crew had multiple incidents yesterday, overnight and up until this morning. We had welfare checks, but we can’t see how long the drivers on the highway have been around,” Adot said in response to ABC15.

Another driver, Amy, said she and her husband were travelling from New Mexico to Las Vegas and were stuck along I-40 in several different locations, one for about 8 hours and another with about six people.

Amy said that a trip from Albuquerque to Las Vegas usually takes about 8.5 hours, and this trip took a total of 26 hours.

Regions around Flagstaff acquired up to 20 inches of snow during Friday’s storm, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS reports Williams, Arizona, east of Flagstaff along I-40, received 28 inches of snow.

“Adot Snowplows will work 24 hours a day in affected areas,” an Adot official told ABC15. “The driver reminds us not to chase snowplows. It leaves four car lengths between the snowplow and the vehicle and doesn’t pass the snowplow. The snowplow cleans snow and ice roads, allowing everyone to travel safer.”

Authorities are encouraging people to track forecasts and pack emergency travel kits before travel. A complete list of items that should be in that kit here it is.
