Eastern Arizona College Celebrates Constitution Day
Thatcher, Arizona – Eastern Arizona College (EAC) recently commemorated Constitution Day with a keynote speech from Graham County Attorney L. Scott Bennett. The event, organized by students linked to President Darren Rogers of Eastern Arizona University (ASEAC), gathered nearly 300 attendees.
The celebration kicked off with a lively performance by the EAC Marching Band, under the direction of Professor Jeff DePain from the Music Department, which included a spirited rendition of the national anthem. Following the music, ASEAC Executive Director Liberty Laban led the audience in a pledge of allegiance. EAC President Todd Haney also spoke, emphasizing the vital significance of the US Constitution and highlighting the necessity for civic engagement and awareness of constitutional matters in higher education.
Bennett, who took office as Graham County attorney in November 2020, brought a wealth of experience and respect to the podium. His professional background showcases significant contributions to law enforcement and justice, including receiving the prestigious Arizona Attorney Advisory Board Prosecutors Award in 2017.
His address captured the audience’s attention as he discussed the fundamental role of the US Constitution in safeguarding both legal rights and civic duties. He talked about legal defense challenges and underscored the importance of constitutional rights, showing a genuine appreciation for the protections these amendments afford both the accused and the public alike.
“The life we lead now is richer than what most have experienced throughout history,” Bennett stated. “And living in the United States, thanks to the Constitution, is as fulfilling as it gets. I hope that those 55 individuals, our revolutionaries, recognized and valued what they accomplished 237 years ago. It’s my heartfelt wish that our Constitution and the United States continue to receive blessings.”
Keith Alexander, the Chief Government Affairs Officer of EAC, echoed the sentiments of the occasion, saying, “At Eastern Arizona University, we celebrate the US Constitution for its historical context and its contemporary role in empowering our communities. This includes supporting constitutional principles that educate our residents about their rights.”
The event concluded with thanks to President Haney for his meaningful contributions and for reinforcing EAC’s commitment to deepening students’ understanding of the Constitution.
