Eileen D. Steger

August 22, 1936 – May 4, 2023







Eileen D. Steger passed away peacefully on May 4, 2023 at Wellington Place, Hartford at the age of 86. For the past few weeks she’s just called this place her home. Eileen was born and raised in Newburgh with her nine siblings. Her polka her dancing has been a part of her life since her childhood and is also where she met her husband. They married her in 1954 and she raised ten children while working as a dairy farmer in Allenton. Eileen was a homemaker, and although she was widowed at age 38, she continued to work hard on farms, factories, tailor shops, and even as a chef to support her family. When her children came of age, she ran the supper clubs “Golden Knights” and “Woods Bridge” with her friend Ray. She lived in Apache Junction, Arizona for many years, enjoying the warm weather and Ray’s saxophone playing. She has traveled all over the United States, taken a cruise to the Bahamas, and visited her daughter in Greece three times.

Eileen wasn’t the type to dote on her grandmother, but she was proud of her children, listening and following them on Facebook and seeing what their grandchildren and great-grandchildren were up to. loved to know Despite losing her husband early and having to endure her grief at the loss of two more children, she managed to find the strength to keep living. She has achieved this to the fullest by approaching her life with a sense of humor. She is very sociable and it was easy to make her friends. In her later years, Eileen kept a close eye on “Jeopardy!” And she’s the wheel of her favorite recliner. Until the last days of her life, she enjoyed playing solitaire, sudoku, facetiming with her family, and watching her Facebook on her iPhone. Her laughter, her lightheartedness and her story will live on in the memory of those who loved her.

Irene includes John (Gwen) Steger, Lorraine (friend Roger) Stevenson, Sharon Steger, Ronald Steger, Jane (Tracy) Smith, Dorothy (Thomas) Lastovich, Joseph Steger , Diane (Yannis) Koronakis’ children survived. She has 13 granddaughters, 4 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Plus her special friend, Donald Kale. She also has surviving siblings Elizabeth Mapes, Richard Slavik, Patricia Mueller, Janice (Wilmer) Crane, Jean (Sylvester) Crane and Robert (Carolyn) Slavik. Her stepsisters are Viola Steger, Veronika Schlegenhaft and Diane Slavik. She has many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Marie (Gruber) and Wenzel Slavik. her husband, Joseph P. Steger; her children, Anthony and Mary Steger. her stepson Scott Stevenson; Her siblings: Rosemary (Roman) Barth, Laverne (Kenneth) Schauvel, Raymond Slavik. Her sisters-in-law: Joan Slavik, Joan Steger, Marie Steger (Whipple), Norma Steger. Her stepbrothers: Theodore, Arnold and Eugene Steger, Josef Schlagenhaft, Roman Baas, Kenneth Schovel, Harold Mapes, Lloyd Muller.

A private family burial will be held by Reverend Richard Stoffel of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Slinger. Her cremated remains will be laid beside her husband at St Peter and Paul Cemetery in Nenno. So the two may continue their polka dance. Rest in peace.
