Enhanced security measures in place for Yuma AgFest in wake of deadly attacks

Yuma, Arizona (azfamily) Police are strengthening security Uma Agfest Saturday in response to an attack in New Orleans.

Previously called events Medjool Date Festivalattracting thousands of people to downtown Yuma.

Yuma Police Chief Thomas Garity said 10,000 to 12,000 people are expected to participate in the event.

The tragic events in New Orleans raised security concerns around the country and led to increased vigilance at public gatherings, including Yuma’s AG Fest.

“These types of incidents, they’re tragedy and create anxiety in the community,” Garity said.

The department regularly considers ways to enhance security at public events.

“We learn from it. If you look at New Orleans, what happened there might have been a tip-off,” Garity said.

Garrity confirmed that police officers and private security attend festivals more frequently. He was unable to provide details, but he wants to ensure that community safety is a priority.

“We’re there to make people feel safe and protect them if something happens so that people can enjoy the festival,” Garity said.

Many people look forward to the annual festival. The festival features delicious food vendors and live music. This year, local growers will showcase Yuma’s rich farming.

“Downtown block parties are always a hit,” said Uma Mayor Douglas Nichols.

Despite the devastation in New Orleans, Nichols is optimistic that the community will come out and enjoy the event.

He is also confident in the extra measures taken by the police.

“Do we terrify our community or do we continue to live our lives and enjoy our community,” Nichols said.

He said it’s important to enjoy himself and know what you are around.

“Don’t take your eyes off, don’t be afraid to say anything. If it all turned out to be better, if it turned out to be something, then you helped,” he said.

I’m happy to hear that safety measures are taken seriously for tourists like Andre Leon.

“That’s certainly true because you need to have that sense of security in order for people to come out and enjoy yourself,” Leon said.
