Even ‘Morning Joe’ Is Criticizing JB Pritzker For His Stance Against Trump On Rising Crime

MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Discusses Violence in Chicago

On a recent episode of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” the panelists urged President Donald Trump to collaborate with Chicago’s leadership following a surge in violence over Labor Day weekend. Reports indicate that at least 54 individuals were shot, with seven fatalities during the holiday.

Trump had suggested deploying National Guard troops to help, but host Joe Scarborough criticized Chicago’s mayor, Brandon Johnson, for failing to address the ongoing violent crime issues. Scarborough expressed a desire for more collaborative efforts, saying, “Perhaps JB Pritzker should think about a more radical approach. He could call the president and discuss a partnership.” He emphasized the need to tackle crime in the state’s most dangerous areas while respecting constitutional boundaries.

Scarborough continued, questioning the current administration’s approach to addressing crime, suggesting that simply stating there’s no issue isn’t enough. “We need to protect lives to ensure their dignity,” he argued.

Co-host Willie Geist pointed out that the level of violence isn’t really a new phenomenon for Chicago, noting the city’s murder rate reached a 25-year high in 2021 and has remained above past averages.

Since at least 1970, there haven’t been many months in which murders exceeded 40, except for June 2014, according to various reports. Recently, Mayor Johnson appeared on “Morning Joe” but hesitated to confirm whether he would support an increased police presence, instead promoting solutions like affordable housing and mental health services as ways to improve safety.

In response to Trump’s comments about the National Guard, both Pritzker and Johnson expressed outrage, claiming that such actions would violate constitutional rights. They also appealed to Trump to help address Chicago’s escalating crime, emphasizing that misinformation about crime statistics does a disservice to public safety.

Lastly, some residents in Chicago have pushed back against the narrative of declining crime, expressing a lack of safety in their neighborhoods. It’s a complex situation, and many in the community seem to feel forgotten amidst the ongoing debates.
