PHOENIX (AP) — Former Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel recently resigned amid controversy over her performance in office.
“We are completely heartbroken by this unimaginable loss,” Adele’s husband David Denit said in a statement issued on behalf of the family.
A family statement did not elaborate on the cause of death, but the relatives said, “By respecting our privacy during this difficult time, we are allowing the press and the public to respect her, her legacy, and our family. I demanded that I do.
A Republican and the first woman elected as a Maricopa County attorney, Adele had been criticized for issues including the dismissal of a 180 misdemeanor case because she was not charged before the statute of limitations expired.
She also faced scrutiny as to whether her admitted alcohol abuse problems affected her ability to work.
Arizona Governor Doug Ducey called Adele’s death tragic.
“The hearts and prayers of the people of Arizona are with Alistair’s family, colleagues and close friends. May she rest in peace,” Ducey said on Twitter.
Adele’s interim successor, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell, said, “Many years of service to our community have impacted victims of crime, first responders and animals, just to name a few. I am leaving behind the legacy I gave you,” he said.
Adele was appointed to fill a vacancy in October 2019 and was elected in November 2020.
She resigned in March and said in a statement that it was an honor to be appointed.
Adele underwent emergency surgery for a brain hemorrhage on election night 2020. She returned to her job full-time by the following spring.
In August 2021, she entered rehab for issues including alcohol abuse, an eating disorder, and more. In September, she admitted to working away from an out-of-state treatment facility.
Mitchell, one of five Criminal Division Chiefs at Adele’s office, questioned Adele’s ability to perform her duties in February, claiming she was rarely in the office and showing signs of intoxication while on the phone. said he was not demonstrating leadership.
Adele replied that she had no intention of resigning and was vehemently opposed to her characterization.
Adele then faced harsh criticism for the dismissal of 180 misdemeanor cases involving people charged with DUI, domestic violence, assault, and crime victimization.
Asked about the layoffs, Ducey said leaders should take responsibility for their actions and not blame their employees. Adele then apologized to the victim and said she took responsibility for what happened at her office.
Adele’s office and the Phoenix Police Department were also criticized for the later dismissal of a gang case brought against demonstrators at an October 2020 protest against police brutality.
