Republican Georgia Rep. Mike Collins reintroduced the law on Thursday to criminalize protests blocking highways.
Background information on the bill obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation shows that a safe passage through Collins’ Interstates Act criminalizes the interstate if it intentionally blocks the interstate. According to Collins’ office, criminal penalties exist for the purposeful presence of highways at the state level, but have yet to pass laws that make this act illegal nationwide. I will quickly reintroduce the law to make the highways a deliberate federal crime. The first Hamas supporters, now illegals and their enablers, are shutting down traffic. To make America safe again, we must have law and order. https://t.co/cap8z5nubi

“These unnecessary and dangerous protests have disrupted children on their way to hospitals, families traveling for holidays, and commuters trying to get to work,” Collins told DCNF. “Unless these protesters impose real penalties, American travelers will continue to be held hostage by these activists. They belong to prisons, not our highways.”
“Givering control of interstate transport to the left-wing madness is now irresponsible and dangerous,” Collins added in a statement shared with the DCNF. “The safe passageways on interstates will criminalize these reckless behaviors and make everyone travelling safer on our highways.”
The bill is co-existed by Republican representatives by Michael Luli of Ohio, Mark Green of Tennessee, Mariannette Miller Meek of Iowa and Tom McClintock of California.
Collins first Introduced The bill was in April 2024, but did not die from the House Judiciary Committee. Secretary of State Marco Rubio introduced his Senate fellow bills while serving as a Florida Senate, but the bill was not officially picked up by Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer.
The decision to reintroduce Collins’ law follows California protests waving a Mexican flag while closing the Los Angeles highway on Sunday to protest Trump’s ongoing deportation efforts. It follows the person. Similar protests against immigration, climate change and the Israeli-Hamas war have previously caused massive traffic disruptions in New York. Chicago and San Francisco.
Collins has already notched one legislative victory with his belt at the 119th Congress. His bill to reduce illegal immigration, known as the Laken Riley Act, was the first bill to sign the law when President Donald Trump took office.
