FACT CHECK: Did Kamala Harris Back Out Of A Debate Scheduled For Sept. 4?

This post is inaccurate. There is no evidence that the Harris campaign agreed to the September 4 debate.

Fact check:

Harris spoke to a packed house on Thursday night, the final day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC). NPRDuring her 40-minute speech, Harris called former President Donald Trump a “clumsy man” and claimed he was supported by tyrants, according to the outlet.

X's post claims that Harris has withdrawn from the debate. The post includes an image of Harris appearing to be speaking, with the words “SHE HAS DISCOTTISHED FROM THE DEBATE” written in large letters. post “Comrade Kamala Harris has informed us that she will not be appearing at the Fox News debate on September 4th,” the message from Trump read in part.

“Coward Comey Kamala has abruptly cancelled the Fox News Presidential Debate scheduled for September 4th!” the post's caption read. “We all know Kamala, with her indefensible record, would not survive an unscripted debate and she knows it too! No press conferences, no debates and no transparency is her campaign strategy!!”

However, this claim is not accurate. A spokesperson for the Harris campaign said: Newsweek The campaign said it had not agreed to any debates beyond the one scheduled for Sept. 10. “We are open to additional debates and continue to have discussions about them,” a spokesperson said. “But to be clear, any additional debates would be contingent on Mr. Trump appearing in person on Sept. 10. We are not at his mercy.”

August 15 statement The Harris campaign post noted that a Sept. 10 debate is scheduled, as well as an additional debate between J.D. Vance and Tim Walz on Oct. 1 if Trump attends.
