FACT CHECK: No, Photo Does Not Show Building Where Hamas Chief Was Assassinated

Hamas Supreme Leader Haniyeh was killed in an attack in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on July 31. Associated Press Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reportedly blamed Israel for the attack and vowed to retaliate against the country, warning that “revenge is our duty.”

A Facebook image showed a damaged building with a blown-out window circled, indicating where the attack took place. “This is what a precision strike looks like. One missile went through the window, only Haniya and his bodyguard were killed. No one else in the building was injured,” the post said. “Don't mess with Israel.”

This photo was taken two years before Haniya's assassination. CNN and other outlet This photo, taken in August 2022, shows the residence of al-Qaeda leader Zawahiri, who was killed in a US military attack in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. CNN reported at the time that the location was confirmed by obtaining geolocation information and verifying the authenticity of the photo.

The building that was attacked is in the Zafaraniyeh district of northern Tehran, next to the Saadabad Palace, according to The New York Times. The image was sent from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's Telegram channel and was apparently confirmed by satellite imagery taken by Maxar Technologies a few days ago, the paper reported.

The attack led to the spread of false reports about the Hamas leader's death, with Check Your Facts recently debunking a purported photo of Haniyeh before his death.
