post Share with X Florida Republican Sen. Mike Walz argues that Vice President Kamala Harris was once ranked the most liberal senator by GovTrack.

Verdict: True

This claim is true: GovTrack ranked Harris the most liberal senator of 2019.

Fact check:

This was reportedly Harris' first rally since former President Joe Biden withdrew his presidential bid and endorsed her. Associated PressThe media outlet said the vice president has also received support from several leading Democrats, including House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and that her campaign has donated more than $100 million.

Waltz's post said GovTrack ranked Harris as the most liberal senator, and he also compared her to other popular Democrats.

“Announcement: Kamala Harris is ranked the most liberal left senator by non-partisan GovTrack,” the post read. “She's more left than Bernie and Elizabeth Warren. She's the Squad Commander!”

This claim is accurate. Archived Harris, then a California senator, was rated “furthest to the political left” in the 2019 GovTrack report card. 2020She ranked second furthest to the left politically, behind Democratic Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. Joshua TaubererThe GovTrack founder told Check Your Fact that GovTrack published a “report card” of lawmakers based on a calendar year at the end of the first year of each two-year Congress.

“The statistics to which Senator Walz refers are based on a single calendar year,” Tauberer said. “Several years ago, we stopped producing a new calendar-year 'report card' because we determined that the limited data available over a single year was insufficient to paint a reliable picture of legislative activity, especially given the ebb and flow of the legislative calendar, and therefore was not a useful tool for users or the American public.”

Tauberer introduced Harris' “Check Your Fact.” page This site is the “most reliable co-sponsored ideological analysis” related to this topic, page “A biennial report card based on two complete years of data for each congressional session.” The graph, titled “Ideological Leadership Chart,” showed Harris to be one of the top 10 most left-leaning scorers on the chart from 2017 to 2022.

Attacks against the sitting vice president have intensified shortly after she received Biden's endorsement, with Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance correctly claiming that Harris and Biden halted deportations and halted construction of the border wall on the first day of their administration.
