FACT CHECK: Will The NYPD Require Its Officers To Wear Their Pronouns On Their Uniforms?

In an email to Check Your Fact, a spokesperson for the NYPD confirmed that the memo is not authentic.

An officer and two passersby were involved in a shootout during a pursuit of an armed suspect through a Brooklyn subway station, police said. CBS NewsThe three injured people and the suspect remain in hospital, with the injured officer “expected to make a full recovery,” according to reports.

A photo snippet from X, formerly known as Twitter, purports to show a memo informing the NYPD that pronouns must be indicated while in uniform. The memo is dated September 12, 2024, and includes the NYPD logo in the top left corner.

The headline reads: “Best Message: General Government Information.”

“Effective Jan. 1, 2025,” the memo reads, “all service members who wear the military uniform will be required to wear and display the new pronoun breastplate while in uniform. The pronouns will reflect the service member's opposite gender as entered and approved in the Central Personnel Resources (CPR) system. Service members authorized to wear their approved department polo shirts will have the pronouns embroidered under their name and rank.”

The caption reads, “TO PANDERM AND SERVE: NYPD ANNOUNCES ALL DEVICES MUST LISTEN 'PRONOUNS' AS OF JANUARY 1ST.” (Related: Did the NYPD arrest Trump?)

However, this note isn't genuine. There are typos throughout, including “efeective” at the beginning, “peffred” in the middle, and “authority” near the end.

“The post contained false information,” the NYPD's Deputy Director of Public Affairs told Check Your Facts in an email. “It is not a true communication.”

This is not the first time the Breaking911 account has spread misinformation. Check Your Fact has previously Exposed The account posted a claim that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had invested in a cannabis-related company shortly before President Joe Biden granted her a pardon for marijuana possession.
