Fallen Yavapai County sergeant honored with blood drive this weekend

Phoenix (AZ Family) — Yavapai County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Rick Lopez, who was shot and killed in the line of duty on June 28, 2022, in Cordes Lakes, will be honored this weekend.

His widow, Kimberi Lopez, said it's been hard, but his faith and family have helped him get through some of the toughest times in his life.

“It never really gets easier,” she said. “They say time heals all wounds, but this is a deep wound and it's going to take a long time.”

This weekend, Kimberly wants to remember her late husband, and she helped organize a blood drive in his name.

“We know we need blood,” she said. “Rick was an all-around blood donor. He gave blood every three months. It's a selfless act. That's who he was, 100 percent. What can I do to give back to our community without anyone knowing?”

“Not a day goes by that I or other members of the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office don't think about the sacrifice made by Officer Rick Lopez and his family,” said Yavapai County Sheriff David Rose. “We still miss him and will never forget him. May God bless his wife, Kim, and their daughters.”

Kimberly said Friday was a great start to the blood drive, and he hopes even more people will come out to donate blood on Saturday.

“Donating blood was always very important to him, especially knowing that he was a universal donor and that he gave blood to anyone who needed it,” Kimberly said.
