Family Of Dad Killed At Trump Assassination Attempt Speaks Out

The family of Corey Comperatore, the 50-year-old volunteer fire chief killed at a President Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, is speaking out one month after his death.

While attending a Trump rally on July 13, Comperatore was shot and killed by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, but he saved the lives of his two daughters by shielding them from the gunfire with his own body, his wife, Helen Comperatore, and their daughters told ABC News' Pittsburgh affiliate. WTA On Friday, they spoke about how Corey's death has changed their lives. Portions of the interview were broadcast on WTAE and ABC6 6 Philadelphia.

“He was a hero, absolutely,” Helen told reporters. “He saved his wife, he saved his kids, and he was just the best guy. Just the best.”

“I'm angry, you know. My husband [Donald Trump]”Unfortunately, that was the plan for the day,” Corey's widow told the outlet.

Corey's daughter, Allison, told WTAE the moment she realized her father had been shot.

“I was the one that my dad threw down,” Allison said. “And as he tried to throw me down, he got shot, and he fell on top of me, and I don't remember hearing any other gunshots, I don't remember feeling any other gunshots, because in that moment, like I said before, I was just trying to take care of my dad. And I turned around, confused, and I said, 'Dad?' And I turned around and he was down.”

“And then I started screaming,” Allison continued, “and I immediately started trying to hold him down so he wouldn't bleed out. Someone was throwing towels over, so someone behind us must have seen what was going on. I was just holding the towel there and yelling for someone to help.” (RELATED: “Fight! Fight! “He's not just a guy who got shot at a rally,” Cary said. “He was a husband, a father, a son, an uncle, and the glue that bound our family together. He was our strength. He was everything to us. And that's been taken from this world.”

Crooks, who was sitting on the roof of a building 400 feet away when a bullet grazed Trump's ear during the assassination attempt, paid tribute to the comperatore by bandaging his ear. Kiss Helen told WTAE she was “hugely honored” when Trump appeared onstage at the Republican National Convention in July in a firefighter costume.
