FEMA Updates Flood Maps in Maricopa County and Buckeye, Gila Bend and Goodyear

oakland, california — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provided preliminary flood maps for unincorporated Maricopa County, Buckeye, Goodyear, and Gila Bend. The map shows revised flood hazards along the Lower Gila River, the Agua Fria River, the Centennial Wash, and nearby tributaries. The new maps help builders, contractors, and homeowners make effective mitigation decisions, thereby contributing to safer, more resilient communities.

There is a 90-day appeal period from January 26, 2023 to April 26, 2023 before the new Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) takes effect. Detailed hydraulic or hydrological data can be used to appeal flood risk information with preliminary maps that can be viewed at fema.gov/preliminaryfloodhazarddata..

Flood hazards are dynamic and change frequently for many reasons, including weather patterns, erosion, and local development. Stakeholders from FEMA, Maricopa County, the City of Buckeye, the City of Goodyear, and the City of Gila Bend worked together to provide up-to-date information that accurately reflects flood risk. These changes may also affect future building codes and insurance requirements.

The Local Mapping Project is part of a nationwide effort led by FEMA to increase local knowledge of flood risk and develop strategies for addressing and mitigating flood impacts on new and improved structures. FEMA encourages residents to review advance flood maps to learn about local flood risk, potential future flood insurance requirements, and identify any concerns or questions regarding the information provided.

Flood risk affects nearly every region of the country. In total, 98% of the county experiences flooding, making flooding the most common and widespread of all weather-related natural hazards.
