Female bear, 2 cubs found roaming in Yavapai County town safely relocated

Yavapai County, Arizona (AZFamily) — A curious mother bear and her two cubs have been safely relocated after being captured scavenging and wandering around a neighborhood in Yavapai County.

According to the Arizona Game and Fish Department, troopers were patrolling Crown King, about 53 miles northwest of Black Canyon, when they received a call from a homeowner. The resident said three bears had gotten into a trash can in his garage.

Game and Fish officials said the female bear and her cubs have been seen several times in the past few months. Although bears are not aggressive towards humans, they have become “increasingly comfortable” in populated areas.

Wildlife officers sedated the three bears and captured a female and a cub. However, the second cub fought back by climbing a telephone pole and getting tangled in telephone wires, before falling asleep.

The Arizona Department of Game and Fisheries captured a female bear and her two cubs roaming the town and released them back into the wild.

Due to the high elevation and nearby electrical equipment, wildlife officers called APS for assistance. APS employees walked the 57 miles from Prescott to Crown King to safely get the baby to the ground.

Officers later discovered that one of the cubs had previously had an infection in one of its legs. The cub was taken to a wildlife rehabilitation center and treated with antibiotics.

Once deemed safe, the mother bear and cub were safely released into a remote area on Monday.
