Fewer children are drowning in Maricopa County this year, officials say

The first responder is cautiously optimistic about decline, but parents warn that they should never guard around the water.

Maricopa County, Arizona – Maricopa County has recorded the own deaths of two children this year. This is a significant drop from the 19 children under the age of five who died in the pool in 2024.

The first responder is cautiously optimistic about decline, but the parents who warn him should never guard around the water.

Last year, Maricopa County saw the most drowned deaths among young children for over a decade.

“All firefighters may not know how many fires they have caused or how many car accidents they have, but all firefighters were able to tell you exactly how many drows they have done,” said Phoenix Fire Chief Rob McDade. “When you see a child who is not lively in that state, it will never leave you.”

Phoenix Aquatic Center is seeing record registrations for summer swimming lessons. Authorities said it showed parents were paying attention to water safety. But Jay Arthur, president of the Arizona Drunk Prevention Coalition, said swimming lessons were just part of the solution.

“Around 70% of the children who actually drowned in the backyard pool or spa, it was non-permeable. So they made it from inside the house to the backyard pool or spa, from unsecured doors and windows,” Arthur said.

Pool fences and alarms can keep children away from the water, but McDade says it should serve as the final line of defense.

“The fence is there if everything else before it fails. A certain supervision makes sure that it doesn’t make it easy for curious toddlers to enter the pool.

Heading towards the July 4 weekend, when many families spend time around the pool, officials say adults need to be designated as pool watchers with attention focused only on the water, not on phones or barbecues.

“You have multiple kids at a big party. You need multiple watchers to see all the kids underwater,” Arthur said. “Get up, walk around the pool and look at the bottom. We’ve actually had our own death over the years where kids play in the pool.

The numbers have been encouraging so far this year, but drudge prevention experts say their work continues.

“It’s fatal. Let’s prevent these drows,” McDade said.
