Flash Flood Warning for Coconino County
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Coconino County, effective from July 17th at 4:43 PM and set to expire at 7:45 PM the same day.
This warning comes as the Weather Bureau alerts residents about the White Sage fire and the risk of dangerous flash floods in nearby regions. At that moment, Doppler Radar indicated a thunderstorm with significant rainfall over the White Sage fire area, with precipitation rates between 0.5 to 1 inch per hour. Flash floods were either currently happening or expected to start shortly.
Areas forecasted to experience flash flooding include Le Fevre Overlook, Jacob Lake, Condor Viewing Site, and the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. Highway 89A, particularly between mile markers 570 and 595, is also included in the warning.
The potential flooding could affect several local streams and rivers, such as House Rock Wash, Rock Canyon, Johnson Wash, Coyote Wash, Wildcat Canyon, Jacob Canyon, Kaibab Wash, and Warm Springs Canyon.
Flood Preparation Tips
Coconino County officials have provided some guidance for residents to prepare for the storms and possible flood threats:
- Consider obtaining flood insurance to protect your property.
- Have an evacuation plan ready.
- Seek higher ground in the event of flash floods or stay in elevated areas.
- Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, as their depth and speed can be deceptive. Roads can wash away unexpectedly, posing hidden dangers.
- Be mindful of risks such as debris, contaminated water, carbon monoxide poisoning, electric shock, and injuries from damaged structures.
- Consult a professional to inspect buildings and utilities before entering areas that have been flooded.
