Madison County Mourns the Passing of Retired Sheriff Joe Wheeler Patterson

The Madison County community is reflecting on the life of retired Sheriff Joe Wheeler Patterson, who has left behind a remarkable legacy. A decorated military veteran and dedicated law enforcement official, Sheriff Patterson passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, at the age of 96, surrounded by his family.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Department announced the news, expressing, “Sheriff Patterson has affected many people throughout his life.” His influence truly resonated within the community he served.

Born on April 17, 1929, Sheriff Patterson was a proud patriot who served in the US Army during the Korean War, earning distinction during his service. After returning home, he embarked on a career in law enforcement that spanned over 30 years.

He spent two decades with the Huntsville Police Department, holding various roles such as patrol officer, detective, and administrative assistant to the mayor. In 1978, he was elected Sheriff of Madison County and would go on to serve four consecutive terms over a remarkable 16-year period, marked by his steady leadership and commitment to community safety.

A proud graduate of the FBI National Academy’s 77th session, Sheriff Patterson was inducted into the Alabama State Police Hall of Fame in 1995, acknowledging his lasting contributions to law enforcement in the state.

Throughout his career, he emphasized treating all individuals with dignity and respect. He often advised young officers, saying, “Regardless of what they do, treat everyone you encounter with respect and dignity.” This philosophy defined his interactions and approach to leadership.

Madison County Probate Judge Frank Burger shared his thoughts, describing Sheriff Patterson as “a man among men. A kind giant who treated the most vulnerable in our society with dignity. He avoided the spotlight but had a profound impact on countless lives.” His passing leaves a gap in the community that will be hard to fill.

Current Madison County Sheriff Kevin Turner reflected on Patterson’s influence, stating, “Sheriff Patterson gave me a chance as a young man and deputy sheriff. He was not just a great leader; he was a great man.” That sentiment is echoed across the community.

US Representative Dale Strong, who serves North Alabama’s 5th Congressional District, also paid tribute, stating, “Today we celebrate the life of Sheriff Joe W. Patterson, a true pillar of Madison County.” His commitment to integrity, kindness, and justice continues to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Beyond his professional achievements, Patterson was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He shared a 57-year marriage with his wife, Jane McKee Patterson, and is survived by their sons, Wheeler Brent Patterson and Jason Scott Patterson, along with his granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers.

In his leisure time, he found joy in tending to his garden and hosting family barbecues, activities he cherished until the end.

Berryhill Funeral Homes has announced that a funeral service will be held for Sheriff Patterson at the Christian Church in Huntsville on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 2 PM.
