Former Santa Cruz County treasurer sentenced after $38M embezzlement case | Local News

Tucson, Ariz. (KVOA) – One of Arizona’s largest government embezzlement cases concluded that former Santa Cruz County treasurer Elizabeth Guffer had learned her sentence. Gutfahr pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $40 million from taxpayers.

Gutfer will spend the next 10 years in prison after being sentenced to 10 years in embezzlement, then 10 years in money laundering and 5 years in tax evasion. The judge ruled that the text would be executed simultaneously, so she would only serve for ten years.

Gutfer entered the courtroom as a free woman, but was taken into custody by a former US s after the judge sentenced him.

This statement exceeded the original judicial contract guidelines. The decision comes after a judge ruled that the case caused substantial harm and strengthened the charges.

The prosecutors were actually opposed to strengthening the claims as much of the damages had not yet been realized, but the judge disagreed.

The judge explained that the crime is unprecedented in its impact on Santa Cruz County’s budget. For more than a decade, Gutfar has carried out more than 180 fraudulent wire transfers and embezzled more than $38 million from counties that affect schools and fire districts.

The judge could not understand Gutfer’s motivation, but her lawyers say she attributed her behavior to depression and epic dreams.

Santa Cruz County resident Bonnie Title attended the verdict.

“The judge said it perfectly. Her grandson, whom she was crying, they had a beautiful playground. But the kids in Santa Cruz County are playing in the sun. Looking at school, I saw what she did, not only the taxpayers but the children of taxpayers.

Gutfahr has been ordered to pay more than $38 million in reparations in Santa Cruz County, with a more detailed reparations report being prepared in 60 days.

Gutfahr must have a three-year, directed release following her prison sentence.
