Mike Gill, a senior official in former President Donald Trump's administration, died Monday after a carjacking in Washington, D.C., his wife confirmed to FOX 5 News on Saturday.
“It is with deep sadness that I would like to inform our community of the passing of my husband, Mike Gill. His sudden resignation has left a void in our lives that will never be filled,” said Christina Gill. Gill wrote in a written statement. Fox 5. “During this time of grief, we are grateful for the outpouring of love and support from our family, friends and community and would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who has offered their condolences and support.”
“Mike was more than just a best friend. He was a part of our family. Our daughters' friendship developed into a beautiful bond, and we are grateful that Mike welcomed us into his life with open arms. It was a testament to Mike's warmth and kindness,” said Drew Maloney, chairman and CEO of the American Investment Council and a friend of Gill's for 15 years. he told the outlet. “Through countless holidays, celebrations, and shared moments, our family has bonded. We are so grateful for our enduring friendship.”
Mr. Gill served as chief of staff at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission during the Trump administration. Fox 5 noted that prior to Gill's death, he served as senior vice president for capital markets at the Housing Policy Council.
On Monday afternoon, Gill was sitting in a parked car when the suspect, later identified as Artel Cunningham, 28, allegedly got into the car and shot him. according to To the Metropolitan Police Department (Metropolitan Police Department). Cunningham then reportedly fled the scene on foot. The newspaper said Gill was being treated for life-threatening injuries at the time police were called.
About two hours later, the suspect allegedly attempted to carjack another person but was unsuccessful, police said. The victim reportedly fled the scene and called police. Shortly after the incident, Cunningham allegedly approached a man and a woman and demanded their keys. The man then shot and killed Alberto Vasquez Jr., 45, who was taken to a local hospital where he later died, the newspaper said. According to police, the suspect allegedly stole the victim's car and fled the scene.

According to police reports, Cunningham allegedly committed two more carjackings that night. Early Tuesday morning, he was driving one of the stolen vehicles when he allegedly began firing at a police cruiser on the highway. The Metropolitan Police Department announced that no officers were injured in the incident.
