Gavin Newsom Asks Trump To ‘Stop’ Texas Redistricting For The Good Of ‘Democracy’

Newsom Urges Trump on Redistricting Efforts

California Governor Gavin Newsom has reached out to President Donald Trump, urging him to cease Republican initiatives aimed at redistricting House maps in Texas and other Republican-led states. In a letter sent to Trump on Monday, Newsom emphasized his proposal for a ballot initiative that would allow Democratic-controlled state legislatures to draw the maps.

The governor expressed concerns over the ongoing redistricting efforts in Texas, labeling them as “hyperpartisan” and detrimental to American democracy. He stated that if these actions do not come to a halt, California would be compelled to lead the charge in redrawing its own maps to counterbalance the Republican strategies. Newsom’s letter suggested that both sides could benefit from halting their respective efforts to create fairer representation.

If Texas’s new map is implemented, it could result in a significant shift, allowing Democrats only about 21% of the state’s Congressional delegation while Republicans maintain the majority. In California, currently with nine Republican representatives, up to five GOP seats could potentially be redrawn following the proposed ballot initiative, reshaping the state’s political landscape.

Newsom cautioned Trump, stating that California’s actions could effectively neutralize the influence Republicans hope to gain. He pointed out that as long as red state efforts continue, California will be forced to adapt and respond in kind, which could further complicate the electoral dynamics.

Other states, particularly Florida, Indiana, and Ohio, are also reportedly considering changes that could benefit Republicans in the upcoming midterms. These initiatives reflect a broader pattern across several red states aiming to redraw lines to secure additional seats in Congress.

As the debate around redistricting heats up, Democratic leaders, including Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, have voiced concerns regarding these efforts, claiming they infringe on voting rights. Pritzker criticized Texas Republicans, arguing they are stripping people of their rights through deliberate manipulations of the electoral map.
