Newsom Predicts Trump’s 2028 Re-election
During a press conference on Thursday, California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his belief that President Donald Trump will run for re-election in 2028 after receiving a “Trump 2028” hat from one of Trump’s prominent supporters.
The event took place at the Japan-US National Museum in Los Angeles, where Newsom also introduced a proposal for a new constituency map. When asked by reporters about the Border Patrol arrests occurring outside the venue, he described the situation as “sick and pathetic.” He warned that if Trump manipulates the election, he might secure a third term.
“It is really troubling, and it highlights the environment we’re in. We chose this location and time for the press conference, and it seems like a calculated move,” Newsom remarked. He noted that while some may deny it, the facts are evident.
He further reflected on the authoritarian nature of the current presidency, saying, “A president running for a third term should raise alarms. This hat I received wasn’t just a joke; it underscores a serious reality that the rules don’t apply to him.”
Video footage from Fox 11 captured at least one arrest by Border Patrol agents outside the venue. Gregory Bovino, Chief of the El Centro sector Border Patrol, stated that the agents were there to maintain safety.
“We’ve made Los Angeles safer because we can’t rely on politicians to do it,” Bovino told reporters.
Newsom’s assertion that the arrests were deliberately timed resonated with Democratic Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who emphatically stated, “There’s no way this was a coincidence!” in response to an NBC4 Los Angeles reporter’s query. She emphasized that it was widely known that Newsom and other officials were holding press conferences about rezoning in the area.
Contrary to the Democrats’ claims, Bovino maintained that the arrests were part of routine “roving patrols,” according to ABC7.
Newsom’s initiative to advance a state rezoning plan follows a similar district adjustment in Texas that occurred in July. He emphasized that California will not remain passive and criticized Trump’s administration for undermining democracy.
The proposed rezoning plan aims to remove around six Republican representatives from California’s House delegation and shift the authority for redistricting from the Independent Commission back to the state legislature. A vote on whether Congress should manage the new map is scheduled for November 4.
Newsom’s announcement regarding the proposal will precede the public’s chance to review the new map, which is expected to be released on Friday. The public feedback portal opened on Wednesday evening on the California Legislature’s website.
