Glendale and Maricopa County partners to build affordable housing

Phoenix — A new project in Glendale will add 790 affordable multifamily rental units to serve 1,465 people annually.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday approved a deal that would provide the city with more than $7.1 million in funding to build affordable housing, according to a press release.

District 4 Chairman Clint Hickman said the partnership with the city is an important step in addressing the need for accessible and affordable housing for the community.

“This collaboration is another example of our continued commitment to ensuring individuals and families have access to safe and affordable housing options in Maricopa County,” Hickman said in a press release.

How are projects funded?

Funding provided by county federal American Rescue Planning Act The quota applies to four rental housing construction projects in Glendale.

Each development has a mix of one, two and three bedroom units.

In addition to the $7.9 million from Maricopa County, the City of Glendale has contributed more than $2.98 million to the project, for a total of more than $10 million. Development costs over $1.2 million are also waived.

“These developments are extremely important. Not just the housing, but the additional site features added to these developments will have a positive impact on the lives of people in my community,” said Glendale Mayor Jerry P. Walters said in a press release.

What are the rental application conditions?

Applicants within 60% of the regional median income are eligible.

According to the press release, households of four must earn less than $56,100 a year.

5th District Supervisor Steve Gallardo said the addition of new housing options to Glendale will help alleviate challenges faced by many individuals and families.

Where are the 4 construction projects?

  • Villa Manuel “Lito” Pena – The development will be located on a 5.5-acre site in the 67th Street and Bethany Home Road area of ​​Glendale. A press release said the 80 units serve 195 people a year and are equipped with a community center. Construction is underway and is expected to be completed in December 2023, with tenants expected to move in in January 2024.
  • Juniper Square – The development is senior-friendly and located on an eight-acre lot at the northwest corner of 67th and Maryland Avenues in Glendale. The property has 221 units with 376 units serviced annually and features several amenities including a community center, pool, gazebo, fire pit, fitness center and more. Construction is set to begin in Fall 2023, with the first renters expected to begin occupancy in September 2025.
  • Unity at Glendale – The development is located on a 7-acre lot in the 51st Street area of ​​Glendale and Glendale. The facility will have 105 units, will accommodate 306 people per year, and will include a community center and several amenities. Construction is expected to begin in late 2023, with the first tenants occupied in May 2025.
  • 67 Flats – This development is located on a 20-acre lot at the northwest corner of 67th Street and Maryland Avenue in Glendale. The facility has 384 units, he plans to serve 588 people per year, and has several amenities. Construction is set to begin at the end of 2023, with the first tenants expected to begin tenancy agreements in December 2025.
