Global interest in news fell from 63% in 2017 to 48% in 2023, according to a report on Tuesday from the University of Oxford’s Reuters Institute.
More than a third of the world’s population occasionally or frequently avoids the news, according to a study titled Digital News Report 2023. Study participants exhibited a “high degree of selective avoidance” of topics such as the Ukraine war and the cost of living crisis. The metric has increased by seven percentage points over the past six years, according to the report.
Only 40% of those surveyed said they trust most news most of the time, down 2 percentage points from the previous year. Consumption of traditional television and print media continues to decline, as does the frequency and interest in online news, the report said.
More than half (56%) of survey respondents expressed concern about distinguishing between real and fake news online.
