Tucker Carlson told the Republican National Convention (RNC) audience on Thursday night about two dramatic phone calls he and his wife had with former President Donald Trump, one of which took place just hours after Saturday's assassination attempt.
Carlson took center stage at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to endorse Trump for the Republican presidential nomination. (RELATED: Exclusive: Donald Trump Jr. to headline 'America First Convention Festival' at Republican National Convention)
“But being a leader is totally different. It's not a title, it's natural. You can't label somebody a leader. The leader is the bravest man. That's the leader. That's true of every human organization. It's a law of nature. And at that moment, a few months before the presidential election, Donald Trump became the leader of this country,” Carlson said.
“I reached out to Trump within hours of that night, and even though he'd just been shot in the face that night, he didn't say a word about himself, just how surprised he was and how proud he was of the crowd that didn't run,” Carlson said.
Carlson continued to push back on those first two ideas after speaking with Trump following Saturday's assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania. The co-founder of the Daily Caller News Foundation and the Daily Caller stressed that Trump's raising his fist and threatening to fight before Secret Service agents shoved him into a motorcade gave the crowd “the courage” to not run away.

Carlson noted that after the shooting, Trump turned down “the most obvious opportunity in politics to infuriate the public.”
The former Fox News host then recounted another phone call his wife had with the former president in 2018, when members of Antifa showed up to protest outside Carlson's home.
“The day after the 2018 midterm elections, Antifa came to my house. Democrat militia. I was at work. It was in a public place, so it was obvious I was at work. My wife was home alone. They tried to get in through the front door. My wife hid in the pantry. It was awful,” Carlson said.

Carlson said he was surprised when Trump called his wife the next morning and said he was “protecting” the house.
“And he said he'll never forget this as long as he lives. And he said, 'You know, there's a lot of hate in the world.' And she said, 'There is, Mr. President.' And he said, 'But there's a lot of love. There's a lot of love,'” Carlson said.

“And we see that love. I don't think it's human love. I won't say any more than that, but I don't think I've always been on the right side. I've been on the wrong side many times,” Carlson continued. “I don't think you've ever heard me say, 'I'm on God's side,' or 'God is with me,' or 'I am with God.' I wish that were the case, but I don't know if that is the case. But I can say with certainty that God is among us right now, and I think that's enough.”
An attack on Trump and his supporters at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday left Trump with a wound to his upper right ear and killed former volunteer fire chief Corey Comperatore, 50. Two other crowd members were also identified with injuries and are reported to be in stable condition.
