Graham County readies for the fair

SAFORD — On Monday, the Graham County Board of Supervisors approved an agreement with project workers at this weekend’s Graham County Fair, allowing eight county employees working at the fair to work overtime.

Graham County Parks Administrator Trey Andrews also asked the board to agree to nominate Barbara Lou Gilpin to be this year’s Fair Parade Grand Marshal.

“If you’ve ever been to the Graham County Florist who was Barbara for decades and later her daughter,” said supervisor Danny Smith. “Anyway, we are happy to celebrate her girlfriend. What a great choice.”

Gilpin leads the Graham County Fair Parade on Main Street in Safford from 10am on Friday. Following the parade, Graham County school bands gather on the courthouse steps for a free concert.

Youth livestock judging takes place during the first two days of the fair, with sheep, goats, poultry and pigeons judging on Thursdays. Beef cattle, pigs and rabbits were judged on Friday.

This year’s performers include bands from Huckleberry Road on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Friday night recording was headlined by his artist The Call Trains. AC/DC tribute his band Riff Raff will headline Saturday night.

Other performers include hypnotist Hypno Joe, telepaths and hypnotherapists The Perceptives, and juggler James Reed.

Saturdays feature a disc golf tournament and 5K run at 8am and a cornhole tournament at 11am. race.

The fair opens on Thursdays and runs from 5pm to 11pm. Hours of operation are noon to 11 PM on Fridays, 10 AM to 11 PM on Saturdays, and noon to 5 PM on Sundays. From 6 he $2 for youngsters aged 9 and free for youngsters 5 and under.
