Coconino County emergency workers rescued a group of people who were stuck 200 feet underground in the Grand Canyon Caverns for almost 24 hours after an elevator malfunctioned on Sunday.
Three people were unable to evacuate due to physical limitations using the 21st floor fire escape.
The group and one of their husbands spent Sunday night in a hotel suite at the bottom of a cave, as an attempt was made to repair the elevator.
That was unsuccessful, so officials decided to move the three people the next day using a technical rope rescue system in an elevator shaft.By 6 p.m. Members of the search and rescue team evacuated the entire group one at a time. None had health problems.
The Grand Canyon Caverns are located in Peach Springs, about 65 miles northeast of Kingman. Attractions allow visitors to tour ancient underground caves and include a small restaurant and hotel.
