Former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley on Friday accused Republicans of contributing to the decline of the U.S. economy, citing the mounting federal debt.
The Republican-controlled House passed the Fiscal Responsibility Act by a 314-117 vote by May 31, after negotiations with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Joe Biden. The act freezes discretionary spending on non-defense budget items at the fiscal 2022 level, adds reforms to energy project permitting, and imposes new labor requirements on some benefit programs. Some conservatives, like Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, criticized the deal for failing to secure sufficient spending cuts, but won the deal, like former Trump administration official Larry Kudlow. Some people praised it as
“You don’t have to tell us how bad things are. You don’t have to turn on the news to see the news,” Haley told attendees at a Lincoln Day dinner in Iowa. “We have $32 trillion in debt. I have always spoken the hard truth, and I will do the same to you today.Our Republican Party has done the same to us.”
Haley criticized House Republicans for restoring quotas, listing a string of pork projects funded “at a time when 1 in 6 American households can’t pay their utility bills.”
Haley previously criticized former President Donald Trump and DeSantis for not mentioning Social Security at the CNN town hall on June 4, accusing them of “kicking the can” over program reform. The Social Security Trust Fund is expected to dry up in 2033, according to to the Congressional Budget Office.
