Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday unveiled a comprehensive manufacturing plan aimed at making America more competitive with China.
Speaking at the Economic Club of Pittsburgh, Harris detailed plans to increase investment in key sectors such as biomanufacturing, aerospace and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing. According to Harris stressed the importance of revitalizing factory towns across America, proposing tax incentives for companies that promote union jobs in the steel and manufacturing sectors.
Harris' strategy also includes cutting degree requirements for certain jobs to strengthen skills development and encouraging the private sector to emphasize practical skills in addition to formal education, The Hill reported. Harris expressed concern that it takes longer for the US to start new projects than China, and promised to take tough action against unfair subsidies and counterfeit goods originating from China. “One of the recurring themes in American history is that when we make intentional efforts to invest in our industrial strength, it leads to extraordinary prosperity and security not just for years but for generations,” Harris said, according to The Hill.
“In all our future industries, we will prioritize investments that strengthen our factory towns — retrofitting existing plants, hiring locals and working with unions — because no one who grew up in America's great industrial or agricultural heartlands should be left behind,” she continued.
According to The Hill, Harris also used the opportunity to criticize former President Donald Trump, calling him “one of the biggest losers in the history of manufacturing.”
“For Donald Trump, our economy works best when it works for the people who own the skyscrapers, not the people who actually build them, wire them and mop the floors. I have a totally different vision for our economy,” Harris said. (RELATED: Hispanic business owners question why Kamala Harris never implemented her 'great ideas' on inflation, economy)
Speaking in Pennsylvania on Monday, Trump's economic policies focused on imposing tariffs to protect U.S. industry and threatened punitive measures if companies like John Deere outsource work to Mexico. Trump contrasted his own economic policies with Harris's, highlighting the benefits of tariffs and increased energy production, arguing that these measures would reduce costs and protect domestic industry.
“Kamala Harris is right that now is the time for change,” Caroline Leavitt, national spokeswoman for the Trump campaign, said in a statement to The Hill. “Harris has delivered for three and a half years and failed. Personal savings are down, credit card debt is up, small business optimism is at an all-time low and people are struggling to afford housing, groceries and gas.”
