Harvard Sues Trump Admin Over Funding Pauses

Harvard filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration Monday evening, claiming the government was using the threat of withholding federal funds in schools as “leverage to control academic decision-making.”

The threat of a major cut in Harvard’s funding began in April after demanding that the university meet certain requirements to address anti-Semitism on campus. Page 51 LitigationThe university, filed in federal court in Massachusetts, said the government has “launched a widespread attack on key funding partnerships that allow for the study of specific diseases.”

On April 11, the Ministry of Education sent a letter to Harvard calling for university issues to be addressed, including coordinating and implementing the disciplinary process, improving screening of international students for “hostile” opinions, and reviewing “programs with a terrible record of anti-Semitism.” Just a few days later, on April 14, Ivy League schools said they did not agree to the terms set by the administration, and would not allow the lawsuit to be “taken over to the federal government.”

Following Harvard’s response, the Joint Task Force to combat anti-Semitism has declared it would cancel the contract value of $2.2 billion in multi-year grants and $60 million from the university.
