A Lake Havasu city man may be eligible to stand trial on charges of disorderly conduct and aggravated assault on a police officer after a confrontation with a Lake Havasu city police officer in April.
The decision came last month following a court-ordered psychological examination of 53-year-old Damon A. Harrison in the case. At the request of defense counsel, Dr. Lawrence Schiff and Dr. Mark Harvanthick were each appointed in May to determine Harrison’s competence. Mojave Senior Judge Rick Lambert will rule on the doctors’ decision at a July 13 hearing.
The incident began on April 7, when Harrison’s social media posts may have led acquaintances to believe that Harrison intended to commit suicide. A witness called the police, who went to Mr. Harrison’s home at Block 2800 Janet Drive to speak with him. Police attempted to search Harrison’s home after being unable to reach him by phone.
Officers eventually found Harrison with a gun in his backyard, according to a police report. Police said Harrison fired several shots at officers’ orders before barricading himself in his home.
A Lake Havasu City SWAT team responded to the scene and attempted to contact Harrison. City officials said Harrison remained in his home for about two and a half hours before turning himself in. No police officers were injured in the incident.
After hearings next month, Mr. Harrison is scheduled to attend a status meeting on the case on Aug. 14. As of Wednesday, Harrison is being held at the Mojave County Jail on $10,000 bail.
