Thick smoke from fires ravaging Yavapai County
Yavapai County, Arizona – Increased wildfire activity from the Pius Fire, as well as wildfires in southern Utah, is expected to transport smoke over the next few days. Lingering wildfire smoke, combined with ample sunlight and stagnant conditions at the ground, can increase ozone levels.
Yavapai County Community Health Services (YCCHS) recommends being aware of smoke conditions and being prepared to limit or avoid outdoor activities. ADEQ monitors are showing high ozone levels for the remainder of this week. Smoke can easily get into the lungs and irritate the eyes. Additionally, high concentrations of airborne particles from the smoke can cause persistent coughing, wheezing, and physical discomfort.
People who are more sensitive to the harmful effects of smoke include those with heart or respiratory disease, young children, and the elderly. Children have smaller lungs and respiratory organs, so when the tiny particles in smoke get into their airways, they are more likely to cause airway blockages or irritation and inflammation. Older people have more difficulty clearing particles from their lungs and may have underlying lung or heart conditions.
Follow these tips to protect you and your family from the damage caused by smoke.
– Use the recycle or recirculation mode on your home or car air conditioning. – Stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed.
– Avoid or reduce outdoor exercise. Do not allow small children to play outdoors. – Drink plenty of fluids to keep your airways moist. Breathing into a wet towel can also help relieve dryness.
– Call your doctor or health care provider if you have symptoms such as chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, or severe fatigue.
