‘He’s An Asshole’: How Trump And Centrists United To Oust The Chair Of The Freedom Caucus

Republican Rep. Bob Good of Virginia had to navigate the difficult task of pitting both the MAGA and traditional business wings of the Republican Party against each other to become the first House Freedom Caucus chairman to lose a primary.

That's exactly what Good did, losing the primary by just 1 percentage point to Virginia Sen. John McGuire, who also received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump. As proof The Main Street Defense Coalition typically supports moderate Republicans, not people like McGuire, who describes himself as an “America First, Christian conservative.”

Insiders explained to The Daily Caller that the unlikely allies united against Goode because of the Republican leader's aggressiveness toward other conservatives and his costly decision to endorse Ron DeSantis early in the GOP presidential primary.

Put more simply, a source told the Caller, “He's an asshole.”

“He's probably the most nasty guy in Congress, and that's a big thing compared to all the other big bastards,” the Republican told the Caller. “I don't think there's anybody in Congress, conservative or not, that would piss on Bob Good if he were on fire.”

“He's difficult even with his friends,” the member added.

A Republican ad creator who worked on Maguire's campaign told the Caller that Good was having problems within the party and was an “unnecessary jerk.”

“Bob Good decided to spend his time in Washington and literally antagonized everyone he met. He was not a principled conservative, he was an unnecessary jerk. And when it mattered, he was surpassed and fundraised by a stronger candidate, John Maguire, who simply ran a better campaign with a stronger message,” a Republican ad creator said. Goode, one of eight Republicans who voted to remove former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from office, still contests the election results and has pledged to raise funds for a recount. After Election Day on June 18, the results were unpredictably close, with Maguire leading by 374 votes, with around 63,000 votes cast. The results were officially announced by the Virginia State Board of Elections on Tuesday, July 2.

Good's campaign manager, Diana Shores, told the Caller that the recount effort would be pursued to assure voters that the election was fair.

“Residents of our district have contacted our campaign and requested a recount. Our donors, volunteers and supporters expect it. This is not about Bob Good. This is about the residents of our district. We will pursue a recount to resolve any questions about the fairness and transparency of our election process so voters can move forward with confidence in the general election,” Shores said. “With the preliminary certification of the primary election complete and the recount underway, and with nearly 63,000 votes at stake by 0.6% in this election, Republican voters in the 5th District have a right to know that every lawful vote was accurately counted,” Shores added. “We will continue to vigorously pursue this goal in the coming days and weeks as permitted by Virginia law.”

In addition to allegations about Goode's personal conduct, his endorsement of Trump added fuel to the fire for Maguire, who had not endorsed Trump for president until DeSantis dropped out of the race earlier this year.

The Trump campaign sent Goode's team a cease and desist letter for using Trump's name on a yard sign without permission. Goode also faced criticism in February after the campaign called police on a group of Trump supporters after they were kicked out of a pro-Trump event, according to audio obtained exclusively by the Caller.

The incident was avoidable, one local official told the Caller.

“I personally called John Maguire the night before the incident at the Trump store in Farmville, Virginia, and asked him not to come to the event because a John Maguire signature event was scheduled,” Buckingham County Republican Party Chairwoman Ramona Christian said. “John Maguire had permission from the store owner and was planning the event with her. I called Bob Good the night before and told him you were not welcome. The owner does not want you to come and you are not following due process at this store.”

“He said I wasn't a fellow Christian if I supported John Maguire,” she added. “I watched him yell at older women and college students who didn't agree with him. In my opinion, the only reason Bob ran for office was to accumulate power.”

A Republican caucus staffer pushed back against the attacks on Goode's personal conduct, suggesting that the money spent on his primary campaign was ultimately a waste for the party: “Hopefully the $10 million they spent on this primary will not be needed in the general election.”

Goode's confrontation with President Trump has also cost her the support of key conservative Republicans. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who supported Maguire, said, “Goode has been nothing but harmful to the Republican Party, to the America First movement, and most importantly, to President Trump's reelection effort.”

according to POLITICOThe group has been having private discussions about who might succeed Goode as chair and whether he will serve out his term in Congress. Republican strategists and lawmakers have also told Kohler that Goode has not run the Freedom Caucus well and is disliked by many of his colleagues.

“Bob Good lost because he's a jerk. Politics is about winning friends and influencing people, and Good is just bad at it. Look at how poorly he ran his own Freedom Caucus,” a Republican strategist told the Caller. “His peers disliked and distrusted him, and Virginians perceived him as incompetent at advancing their interests. Voters perceived him as two-faced, ethically challenged and a shrewd politician. Trump's endorsement of Good put a powerful nail in the coffin of Good's political career.”

Goode's expensive primary challenge has split the Freedom Caucus in an unprecedented way, with caucus member Ohio Rep. Warren Davidson endorsing Maguire against his own chairman, citing Maguire's support for Trump.

President Trump endorsed Good in 2020 before his chaotic primary campaign with DeSantis got underway. Maguire is likely to win handily in November's general election. Good is set to win the 2022 general election by more than 15 points.
