State of Emergency Declared Following Flooding in Gila County
The Speaker of the Arizona House, Walt Blackman, has urged Governor Hobbs to declare a state of emergency in Gila County due to severe flooding. These floods, which started on Thursday, September 25, 2025, have already resulted in at least three fatalities, with one person still unaccounted for.
Gov. Hobbs declared an emergency a few days earlier, on Saturday, September 27.
The floods have caused extensive damage, sweeping away vehicles, harming historic structures, scattering hazardous debris, and leaving the community in turmoil.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with support from the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS), and specialized canine teams working throughout Grove and Gira County.
“The people of Gila County are dealing with disasters that have claimed lives, destroyed homes and businesses, and put communities at risk,” stated President Blackman. “I am in constant communication with both local and state officials, working around the clock to ensure that the necessary support reaches our people. Gov. Hobbs has emphasized the need for immediate action to mobilize state resources for rescue, recovery, and rebuilding efforts.”
He added, “Residents of Gila County need assistance urgently. I am calling on the governor to issue this declaration without hesitation, as every passing hour could mean the difference for lives and properties.”
The state’s emergency operations centers are activated to level 1, with 20 aircraft available and over 45 staff members working around the clock.
As of Monday, September 29, 2025, Grove Mayor Al Gameros confirmed three fatalities and one missing person.
“This morning (Sunday) we welcomed the state’s Incident Command Team, the Type 3 team. They are bringing in a wealth of resources,” Mayor Gameros stated. “Over 150 team members have arrived, and they are currently awaiting helicopters.”
