Hunter Biden is set to plead guilty in a federal tax case in California, according to multiple reports.
The change in policy was announced just before the jury selection process in the case was to begin, and court recessed shortly after it became clear Hunter Biden intended to plead guilty. According to Hunter Biden has reportedly switched to a guilty plea but continues to maintain his innocence, according to NBC News. The terms of the proposed settlement are currently unknown, as is whether the presiding judge will accept it. (Related story: Hunter Biden's tax trial begins this week. The president's son is charged with three felony counts and six misdemeanors for allegedly failing to pay at least $1.4 million in taxes to the government between 2016, when Hunter Biden was battling drug addiction, and 2020. The California tax case will be Hunter Biden's second trial this year, after he was convicted in June in federal court in Delaware of three felony counts related to the illegal purchase of firearms.
Hunter Biden's lawyers and federal prosecutors tried to offer him a plea deal that would have protected him from future prosecution in his Delaware firearms case, but the judge presiding over that case tossed out the deal in July 2023.
