Texas salon owner Shelley Luther won a House seat in the state Legislature on Tuesday by running her business in defiance of coronavirus lockdown orders.
Luther defeated Democratic challenger Tiffany Drake in District 62 with about 78% of the vote. WFAA Reported. She will represent Fannin, Grayson, Franklin and Delta counties.

The incoming state representative recalled on Fox & Friends Saturday that she was not political until a repressive order prevented her and her employees from operating Salon A La Mode. Luther told Fox News co-host Rachel Campos-Duffy how she closed her hair salon for a month, reopened it when her stylist faced financial hardship, and then went to prison. .
“About a month later, my hairdresser called me and said, ‘I can’t feed my kids.’ I don’t know what to do.’ So we just decided to open up.” , I ended up going to jail,” Luther said with a smile.
Luther recalled how the dog grooming business next door was allowed to open while women couldn’t get their hair done at their own salons. After Campos-Duffy mentioned former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s headline-grabbing lockdown scandal, she pointed out that her roots are “two inches long” in her mug shot. “Shelly, I believe COVID-19 was on the ballot,” Campos-Duffy said.
“It’s amazing,” the Fox News host added. “Dogs can be groomed, but women can’t.”
Luther defeated incumbent Republican state Rep. Reggie Smith in the Republican primary in March. She ran unsuccessfully against Smith for the same District 62 seat in 2022.
She also ran for state senate in 2020, WFAA reports.

Luther told Campos-Duffy that he suffered a brain aneurysm in September and was hospitalized for nearly a month. She emphasized her determination to correct the “stupidity” of the Texas Legislature and spoke of her miraculous recovery from a near-death experience.
“I knew it was my turn,” she said.
