“Shelby, you write about how Trump’s victory spurred you and others in the LGBTQ+ community to get married now instead of waiting. That’s what’s happening,” Brown said. Ta. “Tell me more about those conversations and what you’re doing in your own life in response.”

“First of all, Pamela, thank you so much for inviting us. I’m really looking forward to it. So, like I said, when I woke up the morning after the election, it was just a feeling of dread. At the same time, we felt the need to take action. I think, queer community, we’re watching the Supreme Court precedent and all of this very closely,” Wax said. “And I remember when Roe v. Wade was overturned. Clarence Thomas said Obergefell v. Hodges, which gave homosexuals across this country the right to legally marry, was next.” I wrote in my opinion that I wanted to see it. So we thought, “Okay, we’re going to get married now.” Why not strengthen our legal rights a little more? Let’s make things official. ”

The reporter, who was also featured in this segment on CNN, said that she and her fiancée, Olivia Rosen, plan to have a small wedding before the inauguration of the next president, but that they are planning a large wedding in 2025 under the Trump administration. He explained that he was planning to hold a ceremony. She said that “other queer engaged people” she knows are “doing the exact same thing.”

Brown asked Rosen what his “biggest fear” is about President Trump’s second term.

“Well, I mean, to me, marriage is a human right, and I think that’s at stake right now,” Rosen said. “And that’s something we should be proactive about.”

Although she expressed gratitude for living in New York, she expressed concern that if Wax were hospitalized during the trip, she might not be able to visit his wife in New York.

“I think that’s a legitimate concern. That’s what we’re really fighting for, and we’re fighting for other people, too,” Rosen added.

“Especially if things go back to the states,” Wax agreed.

Brown pointed out that President Trump nominated Scott Bessent, a “married gay man,” to be Secretary of the Treasury. She also said Trump has received support from: gay organization And Mar-a-Lago has hosted gay weddings.

“Shelby, is that any comfort to you?” Brown asked.

“That’s not necessarily the case. If you look back at President Trump’s last term, you can see the actions he took. During his term, people made cakes for gay couples’ weddings. “It’s their legal right to stop,” Wax said. “They’ve removed transgender people from the military. I think there’s a lot of horrific behavior in his actions that we’ve seen. So at this point, we’re trying to be realistic and logical. I’m trying to figure out what I can do to protect my family.”

The writer claimed that she and Rosen were a “normal American couple” who wanted nothing more than to “be happy and live the American dream” and “have their rights protected.”

Wax’s op-ed also expressed concerns about adoption.

“Will I be allowed to have a child with my fiancé through IUI or IVF? Will I be allowed to adopt a child? If we have a child, we will both be legal parents. ” she wrote. “If we cross state lines, will our marriage not be recognized? If my future wife gets injured or sick, will I be able to visit her in the hospital? Will it be recognized as such?

President Trump has repeatedly said he does not support a nationwide abortion ban, even though he supports overturning Roe v. Wade. The president-elect said in 2016, shortly into his first term, that he had “no problem” with the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision to legalize same-sex marriage.

“Trust me, as president, I will do everything in my power to protect LGBTQ people from the violence and oppression of hateful foreign ideologies,” he said upon accepting his nomination at the 2016 Republican National Convention. .
